Shopping for Maternity Clothes

Weight gain.

It’s one of the “joys” of pregnancy.

Pre-pregnancy my wife was fit and her body was in all around good shape. Now that she’s growing an alien (as we joke) her body is going through the transformation that pregnant women experience.

This makes the clothes situations tricky, and in some cases, miserable.

She’s taken to a couple pairs of maternity pants (more on that in a second), but tops still prove to be a challenge. She’s at that awkward stage where the belly is getting larger, but you can’t (don’t kill me for saying this) quite tell if she’s pregnant or just gained weight.

We’ve gone out shopping together and I’m now amazed at just how hard it can be to find great maternity clothes. Even the basics can be challenging. In my opinion, just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you should have to give up fashion.

Our baby will be due in the fall, so she’s going to be living in dresses this summer, but she’s also going to need jeans that can be worn between now and then. We failed miserably at a few maternity shops over the weekend, but we did nail it at the Paige store in SoHo.

Below you’ll find a couple of their jean options that we looked at — both turned out to be great.

Two Great Pairs of Paige Denim

VERDUGO ANKLE MATERNITY - LEX

These are the Verdugo Ankle Maternity Lex (how do they come up with these names?).

The shorter length is great for the warmer months and it creates a nice look.

Like all the jeans being highlighted they stretch in the front (not sure what this is properly called), and are below the belly. I can’t begin to imagine wearing the pants that sit above the belly during the summer. It has to be completely miserable.

SKYLINE SKINNY MATERNITY - LEX

These are the Skyline Skinny Maternity Lex.

They have a traditional length and an all around great look.

And on the “skinny” thing… they didn’t come across as a jean that you couldn’t wear beyond four months of pregnancy. They have some nice give, but maintain a stylish structure that can be worn through most of, if not all, of the entire pregnancy.

Both of the Paige options are just shy of $200, but it’s a worthwhile item to invest in given that they’ll be worn frequently and have a nice element of style.

We still have some shopping to do, but it’s great that my wife now has a couple pairs of jeans that she can rely on.
